Solar Car Canopies:
How to Create a Profitable Parking Center that Boosts Energy Ratings for Everyone
Belgrade, April 22, 2024 – The largest trade event in the construction industry in the SEE, the International Building Trade Fair (UFI) – SEEBBE, runs until April 25, offering visitors the opportunity to glimpse into the future of the construction industry, exploring smart construction sites, digital innovations, and sustainable solutions. Propulzija presents the unique Greenport parking ecosystem in Hall 4, introducing to the audience how it is possible to create a profitable parking center and enhance the rating of a multifunctional facility with the help of solar energy.
The Solar Car Canopy, Propulzija Greenport, is a system of solar and steel panels that cover parking spaces, enabling the user to generate electricity from clean sources and simultaneously save on the energy they consume. It is equally applicable for commercial and industrial use. The share of energy from renewable sources is increasing throughout Europe, including the Western Balkans region. The EU Statistical Office data shows that renewable energy accounted for an average of 23 percent of total energy consumption in the EU during 2022. Surprisingly, almost the entire Western Balkans region surpasses this level. The commonality across the region is the increasing use of energy from renewable sources. The fastest-growing source of energy not only in Europe but also globally, is solar energy – the most abundant resource on Earth that does not produce pollution during electricity generation.
Dejan Blagojević, Propulzija CEO, emphasizes that solar car canopies are the future of sustainable industrial, residential, and commercial parking. „By installing Greenport on just two parking spaces, 7,100 kWh of green energy is generated annually, enabling an average electric car to travel up to 36,400 kilometers per year. The cost of industrial electricity will decrease by 12 percent annually, while such production simultaneously covers up to 70 percent of household electricity consumption annually.“ He adds that „With government subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles, the installation of Greenport solar car canopies also brings annual savings on commercial charging costs of up to 3,500 euros and enables an electric car to travel up to 36,400 kilometers per year.“
This solar panel system – covering parking spaces – significantly enhances the market rating of the facility itself, whether it is a building, business, or residential property. „Transforming an existing parking lot into a parking system that independently generates clean electricity is in line with BREEAM and LEED construction standards,“ emphasizes Dejan Blagojević, Propulzija CEO. He explains that BREEAM is a British and LEED is an American system for assessing the sustainability of buildings and their environmental characteristics, applied worldwide. Construction in accordance with green standards consequently increases the rating of the facility itself. Research confirms that every building with a LEED certificate on the real estate market can be sold at a 30 percent higher price. In the case of these car canopies – the rating increases, thus increasing the market value of properties that have such parking facilities. Additionally, the initial investment in the Propulzija Greenport ecosystem pays off within a few years, and the parking system becomes financially sustainable in the long term, making it a kind of profit center.
Solar car canopies also enable the creation of energy for powering electric vehicles, which will undoubtedly increase in number. By mid-2023, there were just over 1,700 in Serbia, compared to only 102 just three years earlier, in 2020. Longer-term estimates suggest that by 2040, up to 300,000 electric vehicles could be sold in Serbia. As for electric chargers, according to data from early January, by the end of 2024, there will be a total of 113 on highways and expressways in Serbia. Currently, there are eight, with an additional 18 under installation.
